“Spring, time to lighten up!”

Hi and happy “almost spring”! I feel like now that the crazy holidays are over and the typical January/February ‘cleanup and purge’ phase is over, its time to think about freshening up the décor in our homes to reflect the rebirth that will soon start taking place outside!

Spring & Fall have become my favorite seasons as I’ve grown up! When I was a kid, it was summer and winter, of course! I still love summer, but the high temps here in western Kansas can be a bit much for this gal! Let’s talk about some of the things we can do to make our homes ready for this wonderful time of awakening. Spring, Lent and Easter are wonderful times to reflect on growth, gratitude and change. Here are a few tips and ideas that I’d like to share with you that really make me anxious for the new season upon us.

Let’s talk palette!

There aren’t any specific rules here as with a lot of design today. But, more often than not, I tend to ‘lighten up’ most of the accessories, pillows, throws and even many of my actual holiday décor that I pull out this time of the year. Here are some examples:

Put away those dark and heavy throws and replace them with lighter weights and softer colors such as creams, whites, softer blues and teal and maybe even some blush and softer greens. Add fresh or faux silk flowers and/or stems of blossoms in clear or mercury glass vessels throughout the house. I change out the candles in my kitchen, bedroom/bathrooms and living areas with soft lilac, lavender and other mild fragrances (preferably in whites and cream colors). In my living room and guest rooms, I love to swap out throw pillows for the same creamy whites and softer color pallets that I use in my throws. Love to add little touches of Easter in my entry way and kitchen as a welcoming and cheery greeting to my guests as well. Again, I repeat the same soft, creamy colors there. All of these simple changes are now creating a consistent flow of ‘lightness’ throughout our home. I even reduce my accessories to a minimum of stem ware and pewter serve ware only on my open hutch displays because I am ultimately trying to “lighten up” the house! I think a “Less is more” attitude is the theme here!!

Here are few examples of my suggestions in photos that I really need to apologize for upfront. The quality of the photos isn’t the best. I took them with my IPhone 7+. I really just needed to get to posting, so I promise to use my ‘real’ camera in the future! 😉

I have a lot of ideas stirring around in my design brain right now! I have been in a remodel mode here since the fall. There are several projects that have been completed and several that have not. In my coming posts I’ll be sharing with you the before and after photos of those completed projects and taking you on the journey with me through the next phases. We’ve been in our home for nearly 16 years now. In that period, we have undergone 2 major remodels and a rather huge addition. Our home has gone from 2800 sq. ft. to 4000 sq. ft. plus a 1200+ sq. ft. finished and remodeled basement! But you all probably know how it goes for those of us with the need to design and create beautiful spaces!! Carry on….
